Ortiz Family, Puros Santa Clara owners, has been involved in the tobacco business since 1830. Santa Clara is a ranch in San Andres valley, where the best crops were obtained. Santa Clara factory and one of the strongest brands were named after this successful domain. Here, Jorge Ortiz Alvarez, President of Puros Santa Clara, began the production of hand-made cigars in 1967.
The tradition of smoking Cigars was probably first used by the ancient Maya people, who lived in Mexico in the states of Veracruz, Campeche, Tabasco, Yucatan and Chiapas. They introduced it to the Native North Americans who then believed it had medicinal properties and used it in their ceremonies.
For years, the ancient soils of Mexico have produced great tobaccos that have quietly ended up in some of your favorite hand-made cigars, usually as binders and wrappers. For too long, that nation has been a tobacco grower to supplement the blends of other countries’ cigars.
Now, Santa Clara has stepped out into the open challenge any takers that Mexico not only grows some great leaf, but is fully able to produce great hand-made cigars.
